This cake was made for my nephew’s birthday. The bottom layer is covered in butter cream and the buildings are made out of fondant. The top layer is covered in fondant and imprinted with a brick patter and then dusted sporadically with charcoal luster dust to bring out the brick a little. The wall behind the Hulk was made with melted chocolate candy disk and using same mold that I used to imprint the brick on the fondant. I used lollipop stick with more melted chocolate on the back to hold the wall up. The stone around the first and second tier is also melted chocolate candy disk using a mold that looked like stone. The letters were cutout of fondant and adhered to the cake board with clear piping gel.

Cupcake Stand by Susan Carberry

This weekend I had the pleasure of attending a Fall Demo hosted by Susan Carberry at her shop The Cake Cottage, located in Murrieta, California. She created a cupcake stand like no other with just a few items from the hardware store, fondant, food coloring and plastic plates…

She used a wooden base to support the structure. PVC pipes for the tree branches which were attached with screws. She used a cooking torch to burn the PVC pipe were she wanted the PVC pipe to bend. She covered the whole thing in white fondant and used a flower/leaf modeling tool to texture the fondant to look like wood. She then painted the whole thing with yellow and brown food coloring….

This one was made with a scary face for Halloween theme but you can easily leave the face off and make one with a Fall theme. The results were simply amazing...

Wine and Cheese Cake

This is another one of Susan Carberry’s wonderful cake decorating classes. The cake itself is a ¼ sheet cake covered in fondant and hand painted to look like wood. The lid is a cake board covered in fondant and also painted to look like wood. The wine bottles, wine glasses and cork screw are made out of chocolate. The cheeses are made out of fondant and the labels on the wine bottles, cheeses and crate are edible icing sheets. The grapes on the vine are buttercream icing.

Going Safari

This weekend I took and decorating class with Susan Carberry. It took over 9 hours to decorate this cake but it was well worth it. I think it turned out wounderful. The animals (all nine of them) are hand molded and resting on a trunk, crate and chest.

In my opinion cake design for boys are difficult to come up with which is why I love the look of this cake. It was made with 2 layers of a ¼ sheet pan and carved on one side to make the sleeves. It’s iced with buttercream icing made with brite white and high ration shortening. The number and trim on the shirt is made out of fondant mixed with a little tylose powder. I used a number template I got from the internet as a guide to cut the number.
